Happy Chinese New Year! 2012 is the Year of the Dragon! A very powerful year it can be for you if you were born under this Chinese symbol.

I'm joining in with Susan's Tablescape Thursday, Leigh's Thrifty Thursday and Michael Lee's Foodie Friday this week.

But first you have to eat, right? Right! Why not eat with a dragon?

What, you think I'm pulling your leg? No, I'm not... Check this out!

See?! I told you you'd be eating with a dragon! I didn't say a real one, now did I? What were you thinking? lol

I come from a family of Chinese and Spanish (Spain) bloodline, but I am very much a fan of the Chinese cuisine. It's simple to make, healthier if done right and takes very little time to put it together! Even setting Chinese tables are not that complicated. It's all about being able to share the food with those you care about. So I do this for my children, all three of them though one is in college now. And my husband loves Asian foods as well so it's a winner table and menu every time!

I lucked out with this mistake in setting: it looks like the night time when the fireworks light up the sky with its rainbow of colors! Happy New Year!

A dragon is a creature of fire and majesty so I laid him on the center of a solid red runner and surrounded him with what else, candles!

He's been with me since 2008 and he normally sits on the EAST side of the house, facing the front door to bring in GOOD CHI.

Isn't he just a handsome yet ferocious creature? Just fantastic! I got him half-off, too!

I used my Waechtersbach "Terra Cotta" dinnerware as my chargers and used my Target Home "Red Solstice" as my dinnerware and its condiment bowl. My family, except for me, knows how to eat with chopsticks so these kinds of settings are real treats for them.

I set two different napkins to break up the formality of the tone-on-tone placesetting.

I made some steamed Jasmine rice and my version of Orange Chicken for GOOD FORTUNE, but I topped mine with veggies sauteed in the same sauce. Carrots are for GOOD LUCK, and the rice is for A GOOD LINK BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH.

I also made Roast Beef with Oyster Sauce over a bed of rice noodles, symbolizing GOOD FORTUNE (oysters); LONG LIFE (noodles) and Chinese Cheesecakes. The rolls symbolize WEALTH since they resemble gold bars.

Wondering what's in it? "Voila!" Cream Cheese & Mascarpone blend, black & blueberries. Yum!

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: (Brain feels like she's back!) Holidays are often defined by symbols and colors, why not infuse it with a third factor, heritage? For example, with the past Chinese New Year, the symbolism mean more than the colors and no matter where you're from, you can make it work! Instead of Chinese cheesecake, make Cheesecake Chimichangas, Mexican Rice with a hint of Orange, Lime and Garlic Chicken in Annatto Sauce over Pasta and Grilled whole fish! Red is prominent in most cultures, so it's an easy transition!

Another year to blog with our plates and glasses! Well, let's just say that I am pumped this year for ideas!

I already have ideas for the upcoming Valentine's Day and today, I scored 60% off discount on uber cute Fall dishes that totally feels at home whether the table will be formal or casual enough at a buffet setting! So psyched about all that!

But I will be joining Marty, Susan, Michael Lee and Leigh this week with these awesome pics! I think they will speak for themselves: Most pieces have been acquired no less than 50% off and up to 90-95% off! Simplicity and ease is what I went for this year, so no muss, no fuss!

I will bundle these three holidays as:

Here's Christmas Eve Dinner,

Dinnerware: Food Network "Currant"- Kohl's 80% off, 2009
Flatware: Oneida - Sears 50% off, 2010

I made Pansit Sotanghon (mung bean noodle dish), Pochero (similar to beef stew only with cabbage and bananas), Bistek (beef simmered in citrus and soysauce with onions), and chicken Adobo and Pork Sinigang (tamarind broth based dish)

The juice is made of Calamansi or Filipino equivalent of orange, lemon and lime, only better... And of course there's the staple coconut juice. We also had Sarsi, our own version of rootbeer, but we forgot to put it on the table.

I make exclusively Filipino dishes every Christmas Eve dinner since 2007... Every year, I add or take away a dish and this year, I learned a new Filipino dessert. We also make sure we have Filipino snacks on hand like Clover chips, Pulburon (powdered candy), Curly Tops chocolate and dried mangoes.

I focused the table on ambiance and conversation readiness. So I put chips on each end for ice breakers and instant appetizers.

Now, here's our Grazing Table for Christmas Day

Every year, our Savior Jesus Christ gets his own birthday cake, always chocolate but different levels of decadence. This year, it is a flourless Semi-Sweet Chocolate Cake topped with powdered sugar and chocolate cookies.

My two newest Nativities: both from my in-laws...

Every Christmas Day at my in-laws, they set up a table full of food gifts they received and they just "graze" all day! So we adapted it our family and now our children look forward to it every year!

That is Tyler Florence's Ultimate Cheesecake and I just topped it with Blackberry Jam and Blackberries dusted with powdered sugar.

Each year, the table is full of all the wonderful things our family loves to nibble on! Especially fruits and chocolate!

This is our newest Filipino dish, Biko, a traditional sticky rice cake cooked in coconut milk and brown sugar. It is yummy! We also make Puto, a steamed rice cake (right bottom corner of above picture)

And here's New Year's Eve!

Our New Year's Eve meal is very symbolic of my part Chinese heritage and my practice of Feng Shui. We celebrate with the typical loud noises, toasts and greetings and afterwards, by eating an orange for a prosperous year as its color and shape resemble gold, a cookie for a sweet life...

If you notice most of the foods are round for a balanced life as in Yin & Yang. Noodles in the soup for another year of good health, eggs and sweet potato fries and fruits for abundance.

We chose our drink carefully every year and since our goal for 2012, is better health, I put fresh squeezed juices of pineapple, oranges and mangoes. No sugar added.

Blue and green are also significant in Feng Shui as it represents Water and Earth. Our house is NW oriented so the two colors invite people of good influence and family harmony. The flames represent South and prosperity and the iron candle holders as well as the metal fruit/dish holders represent knowledge as well as wishes for a bright future in the coming year.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

September, October and even most of November rolled around and I was without any ideas nor time to prepare for Thanksgiving. It's been a roller coaster of repairs, sickness, lack of sleep, full schedules and that's just the kids!

But I knew that I wanted to do and make this Thanksgiving special just like the others as we truly have a multitude of reasons and things to be grateful for.

For starters, our loving family; without them, we would all be like chickens with no heads! lol (true, though)

For God and his Son who sacrificed much for us, and this year alone, our own family's blessings are innumerable!

For my children and husband-where would I be without the frustration and chaos? (at a beach sipping pineapple smoothie, maybe?)

For having a brain that works for me- it landed me a temp job that I LOVE!

For our home that kept us warm, cool and in between

For higher education- there's just nothing like knowing you have a degree to fall back on.

For music and books! My sanity saver, for sure!

And for friends and wonderful acquaintances-- rounds you out as a person (who wouldn't want that?)

Ok, ok... Here's what our dining room looked this year... Mind you, this idea came to me, 3 hours before the ham had to be in the oven. And it took me 45 minutes total to finish. All I had before that, were mums. Just mums. ("Brain" was also under the weather...)

"Under the Canopy of Gratitude"

INSPIRATION:

"Our Crape Myrtle Trees"

I first would like to confess: With 15 CM trees around our house, appreciating them is not always easy for me. Add to the fact that our neighbor also have about 5 big ones that drape over our fence and it's like we are in a grove of CM trees! But this Fall, I am in total awe of each trees individuality: I had one tree full of vibrant red leaves, another yellows only, another, a wave of orange-red and another, a dull burgundy... In short, just a beautiful Autumn rainbow!

I'm so glad I'm not a shopper, but rather, I'm a gatherer. A gatherer of ideas around me... Enjoy the view!

No fancy vases of plant holders, they are held together by the nandina and crape myrtle branches! Had the tealights forever (Ikea). I used the nandina berries, leaves and crape myrtle branches from 4 different trees we had around the house. Who knew the myrtle leaves can produce shades of yellow to burgundy? Just amazing during Fall!

I also found 2 great runners from JCP Outlet ($6), other than that, no direction, no ideas swam in my head. It was so frustrating! I even went and visited multiple blogs, but none gave me that "a-ha!" moment.

So it was back to just using what I already have, and I think it worked out better. I cut several branches of CM trees and placed them everywhere to give the illusion of being under the canopy of CM groves. It was very calming sitting in this room...

This beautiful chandelier, my sister gave it to me this past summer, it's called "Carolyn". (Costco)

Does anyone know what tree these beautiful leaves belong to? I see them everywhere around here, but I have no idea what they're called!

I used fallen leaves and branches with colorful leaves. I only had to purchase 2 bunches of burgundy & chartreuse mums ($8)

Even though it's just our family this year, my children were not going to let me get away with ordering any food, but since I've been under the weather, we opted for quick dishes:

Cliff House (Maine) Clam Chowder, Honey Butter French Bread (from scratch), Sauteed Asparagus, and the newest dish, Lobster Medallions & Chanterelle Mushrooms with Saffron Butter Sauce and of course, the Spiral Ham with Sugar & Spice Glaze

The dessert table always have to be just as exciting as the dinner menu: We always have fruits, cookies (gingerbread shaped cookies-maple leaf & acorn-21 cent clearance find at Kroger's)

Tabletop Tuesday, Thrifty Thursday and Tablescape Thursday

Wow! I cannot believe I forgot to post this tablescape! What is wrong with me? (Ok, a lot, but you're not suppose to know that) Anyway, this is back from January 22, for Mr. Man's birthday! He turned 40 and I wanted an all-orange theme. Why? Because he loves, loves orange and I think I love him enough to do one. (Oh, you caught the "I think" part? Man, can't get away with anything in the blog world!)

THEME:"Orange I nice to do this?"
INSPIRATION:"Mr. Man"

First, let me tell you, finding orange in January is like asking for a root canal without anesthesia! If it wasn't cost prohibitive, the selection was not up to par. Especially when the birthday boy decided he doesn't want bright orange. It took all of December and most of January to figure out what orange direction I wanted to go.

I wanted it to reflect him: gorgeous, warm, elegant, casual and family oriented.

So... using my creative juices to glue (ewww!) the theme swirling in my head, I decided not to look in stores and into my closet instead! Well, what do you know, "Brain" did it again!

Had the rust colored heavy fabric from 2009, found candles in Marshall's for less than $3 each, used my fall dessert plates and my off white Bianca set, my country plaid napkins I found at Kohl's, orange marbles and tealights and "voila!" a gorgeous, warm, orange tablescape for Mr. Man!

The paper chains and origami birds on top, a family project. I found the pitcher at Marshall's, too ($7.99)

We made sure he didn't forget how "young" he is so we got just the right candles to remind him! lol

I made the cake, chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting mixed with a lot of orange food coloring!

Isn't my son, I-Dude, only 9, so clever to make cranes and eagles origami?

He also made that orange star. Mr. Man asked for pasta with shrimp and creamed peas and potatoes.

Used Nandina leaves and berries. Last December, the berries were very red, but in January, they were orange! How cool is that?!

Aren't these candles just gorgeous? The scent is called "Orient Tangerine". I love it!

Heeeeeeeeere's Mr. Man! The birthday boy, the gorgeous love of my life and father of my children!

Here's the two little ones, J-Pony, 12 and I-Dude, 9. L-Infinity is in Hawaii, attending Brigham Young University in Laie, Honolulu. She thought it was a great table, too!

So... I hope you forgive me for not posting this sooner. I was not thinking of you. I'm so sorry! But, will it help if I told you that Mr. Man was so pleased with the decor that he asked me if I was showing it to you? I was so pleased that look, I forgot!Heart you all for stopping by! TABLESCAPING IDEAS:("Brain" is sighing that we remembered) Now that the holidays are upon us, let's not worry about trends, traditions or aesthetics. Focus on what you know-what you have and the reasons why they stayed in the first place. Instead of one massive spread of flowers, trinkets and baubles on the buffet, why don't you scatter different picture frames of past Christmases? That way, when the guests arrive, you have an instant focal point and a conversation starter!

Repairs derailed much of Fall here!

Grrr! I have no access to my decor, plates or much of anything for that matter as our kitchen/office area decided it will still be under repair!

So far, we've had to fix the sink, both hot and cold water lines, the hot water heater expansion tank, the AC condensation line, and the termite damage to the office area. Because of our schedule, it is so slow going!

I will try to be around before Thanksgiving. (fingers crossed!)

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: (Brain is busting with ideas, no materials to work with at the moment) Wrap around some silk leaf/berry garlands on your chandelier then with a clear fishing line or nylon thread, suspend some real leaves in varying heights and positions to simulate, well, Fall! Remember to use tea lights so the flames won't reach the leaves. Safety first!

Fall is Here Again!

Tablescaping Ideas: (Brain is quite buzzed this time around) Want great and new ideas for a placemat to do with your children? Do some shadow printing! All you need is a dark construction paper, glass picture frame, leaves of your choice, the design. Size the paper in the frame, pull out the glass. Place your leaves design on the construction paper. Gently place the glass over the paper and secure with clothespins. Place it outside, glass side up while the sun is shining and leave overnight to fade the paper. The next day, carefully pull off the leaves and the "shadow" will be left behind!

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: (Brain is exhausted from gardening, but she'll try...) Trimming bushes and scraggly tree limbs? Why not repurpose them and use them as centerpiece? Just use what shape of twigs or volume of leafy stems you want and voila! Magazines eat up the height and unique impact it makes enough to show you. As well as beautiful and sensible enough that you can imitate it effortlessly. So fertilize and "clean" those bushes and trees, they may just be what you're looking for as your next inspiration!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!

Hope you all had a great time celebratin' and spreading love to all!

I'm joining Marty, Susan and Leigh again this week. Woot! It's so rare that I get to join in that it's an occasion in itself!

THEME:

"Collecting Two Dozen of Love"

INSPIRATION:

Two dozen beautiful roses and Two "Love" Collection Glassware

Well... This year, I decided that no matter how hectic our pace still is, we will celebrate V-Day. Nothing fancy, but definitely some flowers are involved and since roses are abundant this month, I managed to receive not one, but TWO DOZEN! (How lucky can one gal be?)

This morning, Mr. Man surprised me with a dozen white roses, and some purple and green filler stems to make a beautiful bouquet. He knows I prefer making my own, so he doesn't bother to wait and have a store do it for me.

Our dinner and table plans were simple enough: No fuss and the kids dictate the menu to include them in the celebration. So we used my Wachterbach "Terra Cotta Cherry" dinner plates, everyday American Living white handled utensils, paper heart napkins and Kane Home "Love" Collection champagne flutes from the closing Albertsons nearby.
We just lit some tealights and opted to have a bare table since it will be fully sanded and re-stained soon.
We feasted on Penne Alfredo with Smoked Sausage, Steamed Broccoli and Basil Garlic Bread along with some Garlic Parmesan Wings that we got FREE from Pizza Hut since they messed up our original order.
I transferred the white roses on to one of my smaller cabinets and the lamp light gave it a very romantic feel, fitting of a V-Day picture.

On Sunday, we had a Pre-Valentine dinner to use the cute glasses we got from the Dollar Tree a few weeks back. It's also the Love collection from Anchor Hocking. Only it was brown, pink and burgundy and it had a modern yet whimsical Victorian feel and look to it.
So we used one of our flat sheet sets to provide the pink, burgundy napkins and swirly pink/brown Mulberry Swirl bowl.
...and to highlight the dozen baby pink/mint green roses I got on Saturday. I created a simple bouquet by using some leaves from the bushes out front.
I just put together whatever looked good together. And I found my dancing couple statue and used that.
I think it gave a romantic story to this otherwise simple vignette. It reminds me of young couples who sneak around for that one last kiss of the night. *sigh*

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to ALL!

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: (Brain is so in loooove!) Holidays are known for their colors which makes decorating easy. But if what you have don't seem to "match", it can be frustrating. Why not cater the holiday to your typical color scheme? Blue Valentine's Day perhaps? Why not? Just use lots of candles and white or yellow flowers and your romantic setting is ready!

An Orange Birthday

Well, if you visited my blog last week, I hinted that I will be doing an "Orange" themed birthday for my DH's big day. Well, here it is!

I'm joining Marty's Tabletop Tuesday, Susan's Tablescape Thursday, Leigh's Thrifty Thursday & Michael Lee's Foodie Friday. This will be a fun week!

"Orange you Happy, it's Your Birthday!"

INSPIRATION:

My dear wonderful husband of 14 years and his love of orange

Mr. Man turned 40 last Saturday and since he needed to work that night and the following morning, we really didn't have much time to plan for anything more elaborate to celebrate his big milestone. But I wanted to make sure that he knew we wanted him to feel special, so I honed in on his favorite color-ORANGE. But how to make it fit his personality?

Mr. Man, my forever love

I decided to find a shade of orange that also reflected how he makes us all feel... At home and loved. Cozy and Protected. Happy and Warm.

So I looked to the warmer shades of rust, red-orange, and orange-brown and a color scheme was born! We dug up my old 12x12 scrapbook papers with old-time prints, construction and origami papers. We made paper chains and origami birds and hearts. We hung them up on the mirrors, chandelier and bay windows. We put them on top of the plates and table.

We used my son's current sheet set to set off the color scheme. It was perfect. The only thing we had to buy for this theme were the Capri "Mandarin Orange" scented candles and water pitcher by Home Essentials and Beyond's "Bumblebee Collection" that I found at Marshall's. Total, $19!

My DH is a very simple man that has a multi-faceted personality. He loves a good sense of humor and he is incredibly smart and handy. But even though he loves skiing, RC cars, computers, 80's Techno music and puppies (and me and the kids, of course), nothing makes him happier than being at home, relaxing, so... that's what I focused on!
The table is not fussy, it's clean, monochromatic, warm and definitely inviting. We layered the different shades of warm oranges that we could find without sacrificing elegance and a little bling. lol
He taught our son how to do origami cranes and now, our 8-year old, I-Dude is the Origami Prince of the house! He made these cranes and eagles. He also made the hearts hanging on the chandelier and a big 5-pointed star on the food table. My napkins had enough warm shades that it was a perfect match for this table. It gave just enough layer to make it more romantic and so my hubby!

I just love how the camera picked up on the sparkles of the flames. Now that's what I call, blingage! lol
I used Nandina leaves and berries to punctuate this table that held all the food choices he made: Seafood Pasta, Creamed Peas and Potatoes, and a Chocolate Cake I made from scratch, on the fly. Why? Because originally, he chose a Milk Choc BC variety but it was so moist that they crumbled out of the pans! Grrr! The one I made, he loved much better!

We are both from California, so these shades reminded us of the sunsets there. It was a perfect choice. The smile on his face while we dined by candlelights and lamps were evident of his approval. I wanted it to be a perfect birthday dinner, and it was. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that his birthday beverage was of course, our traditional Orange Pineapple juice cocktail!
I used my Ikea Fargrik Beige Dinnerware, Studio 33 Autumn Harvest salad plates, and Homer Laughlin Oatmeal Wheat J-63 saucers. The napkins were from Kroger back in 2009 called, Bayfield in Blue. I got 6 for less than $3.00 on clearance! This is probably the 2nd time I used them, I'm so glad I picked them up even though I had to hunt from 6 different bins!
I love these candles, it was almost like they knew I wanted a perfect table-each shot has each one sparking brightly!

I think this is one of my favorite tablescapes of all time...
Our two little ones, J-Pony and I-Dude, all smiles with their dad after a great meal and cake, of course!
This pitcher is so cute! It came in green, off-white and this burnt orange color. The candles and this pitcher were the only shade of orange pieces at Marshall that weren't broken, chipped or too bright. They were meant to come home with me to celebrate my DH's big day. Even the Nandina berries were a deep shade of orange rather than red like the last ones I used for Christmas.
Did I mention I love aerial shots? This one turned out wonderfully!

Why not scope out your collection and isolate those pieces that can be used for all of them? The more common choices are white, gold, blue red and pink. Why not use gold, red and blue to have a more upscale Americanized celebration of these holidays?

Ok, let's get started. In all honesty, our house is still full of boxes now that we've dumped our paid storage and trying to make space for all of our stuff is not a problem anymore, just an organization puzzle. LOL

In all that frustrating and confusing situation, I needed to prioritize. So naturally, I got all my dishes out of their boxes first and did a tablescape! :-)

INSPIRATION:

"Tuscan Retreat" Dinnerware by BHG

This one, I got on clearance last year at our local Walmart. It was normally $34.99, but I got it for $17.00 even! It was a set for 4 place settings; I'm hoping to find another set on clearance soon.

It's by BHG, called "Tuscan Retreat". It was a staple display since 2009 and I've loved it since. But with all the move hoopla, it never came out of its box until after our big move here to our house.
I wanted to capture the landscape of an Italian countryside, crisp, green, romantic and clean. So I decided not to add too much frill to my table and just highlight the dinnerware.
The glasses are my everyday set that I also found at Walmart back in 2008. At Walmart, the box is called Starfire, but in other packaging, sold in other stores, they are called Central Park or Fifth Avenue King. I feel so special for having such a widely distributed set. :-D
This napkin was a Kroger CC (Christmas Clearance) find and as you can see, I got it for 75% off. Very thrifty, indeed!
I love aerial shots, don't you? I opted for just one big hurricane to round out the paper mache red vase and my ceramic rooster. Oh, that's RED btw, my guardian rooster. He's been with me since 2008. Isn't he handsome? I know many of you found his multiple cousins in various Hobby Lobby stores and he's grateful you gave them homes.

I love how simple and clean this table turned out. The greenery is from our bushes in the backyard. Does anyone know what it's called?
I also like upclose and personal shots like this where I put the camera on the table and aim at undersides of the dinnerware.

Another aerial shot. Just before this tablescape, we had our church missionaries over for dinner and this is the set we used. It totally gave me the idea for this since we ate pasta with sausage and broccoli, melon slices and garlic bread.
My utensils are my Oneida "Katrina" set I started collecting back in 1995, just before I was married. It was offered thru Sears credit customers, but I wasn't able to complete it. Someday...

So are you ready to see how much fun I had while I was absent from the blogging circuit? Ok, here we go!

DECEMBER 25, 2010

Here's my Christmas table last December, it was intimate and somber. We only had our two church missionaries for our guests and our daughter was home from college. It warranted a beautiful table, a definite must!
I wanted to reflect my eldest daughter's Christmas theme of Poinsettia and Gold. Mainly red and gold, so I used my LNT closeout chargers and paired it with my 2008 Target Holiday birthday plates along with my Hampton "Lace" utensils. I made it simpler for everyone by just having a paper napkin.
I saw in Susan's at Between Naps on the Porch, the use of Nandina leaves and berries on her table so I used some from my frontyard and it worked beautifully! With some tealights and hurricane lamps, I had a wonderful centerpiece!
I used my very first Christmas runner I ever owned (1997) to bring out more colors of red and gold. It's a colorful toile Christmas scene, over a plain white tablecloth. The glasses were my MIL's gift to me for our 2nd Christmas. It had a simple band of holly leaves & berries and a gold rim. Beautiful and classy.

The play of the cream, gold, white and red, made the table both sophisticated and approachable! My family couldn't wait to sit down!
For more visual height, I hung white and gold glittered snowflake ornaments from our chandelier. Since we didn't use it to create a more somber feel to the meal, I didn't want to completely ignore its presence...
Here's another angle. You can see more of the casual way I surrounded the candleholders with the nandina leaves and the sole vase that held the berries. The verdict, "everything was beautiful!" Gotta love that!

DECEMBER 29, 2010

I turned 39 on this day and my sister and her family were able to fly out from California! It was such a great birthday so I made sure that my birthday tablescape reflected my mood--loved and purely happy! What's the best combo for that? Red and White, of course!
I first featured this plate back in 2008, for our New Year's Eve dinner table. I got these from our local Tom Thumb and as you can see, I also used the same utensil style and a single paper napkin.
I opted for another natural centerpiece, but I used a different bush to complete the look of votive holder. I got the holders back in 2009, during Kroger's Christmas clearance, for 75% off!
I didn't change my chandelier yet because my sister wanted to see it in person. I think it went well with the table; it gave the ambiance a little bit of winter magic... I was able to finally unearth most of my dinnerware collection and finally was able to use my real everyday glasses that I got from Walmart back in 2009.
The runner, another Walmart 75% off find in their clearance section. I needed one for Valentine's Day and there it was!
This whole table... Cost me nothing since they were all from previous years, from my own plants, and only took me 10 minutes to set it up! The verdict? "Wow! You really are good at doing this!"

DECEMBER 31, 2010

I wanted to "bling out" my dining room this time around focus on the bright "fireworks" aspect of celebrating the New Year. My sister and her family have never been to Texas or to our house since we bought it last March. Also, this was my BIL's first New Year's celebration here in the States. So I wanted to make it all special!

First thing to address, the chandelier, of course!

I added more ribbons and silver ornament balls along with the snowflakes. I also snatched some of my tree ornaments as well. :-)
Our centerpiece was a tropical punch of Pineapple juice and chunks, Orange Juice and Ginger Ale. We opted for a buffet style and we turned the table. Again, we made a beautiful but simple table: A flat glittered batting for a tablecloth, not quite covering the whole table. More of the leaves from our bush to accentuate the punch. And, my sister cleverly hid dark chocolate Ferrero Rocher in the leaves as if they are fruits. The kids loved them!
My pièce de résistance, the brie en croute! I used puff pastry and folded it over the brie like a gift! It turned out beautiful! Perfect to feature on Foodie Friday with our lovely Friday host, Michael Lee over at Designs by Gollum.
Here's the punch table with the noisemakers all around. It definitely looked festive!
We also had a gift exchange so we set that up next to the buffet table. I wanted the gifts to stand out, so we set it up over a more "fancy" setting. (Psst! It's sitting on my deep freezer that we just dug out of our former paid storage. Don't tell anyone, ok? lol) We had cookies, fruits, sausages, egg rolls, noodles, candies and the cheese platter. It was great!
We had so much fun playing, eating, tossing and we even had a coin toss for the kids. It was a great month of December for me and family. The verdict? "Thank you, this was wonderful! The best day ever! (My nephew kept telling me that, isn't he sweet?)"

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: (Brain is pulsing with ideas) Don't let company or holiday expectations bog you down into hiding from doing your best. Use what's available, play up your dishes and hide what you lack with the delicious food you will serve. Often, people that notice what you "didn't match" or "didn't quite finish" are those that are fuming because you pulled it off!

Deck The Halls with Susan!

Hello, hello! I'm sooo happy to see all of you here! This meme that Susan at Between Naps on the Porch got me going on decorating for Christmas even though we are still in between projects so thanks a bunch, Susan!

Still no tree though as we're waiting for our eldest to come home from college soon enough and buy a tree that all of us can decorate. Each year, a child has a theme that we build up on. This year, it's the college girl's theme: Poinsettia and Gold. Well... guess what? I don't have much poinsettias! LOL

The fresh ones I got are dying from the yo-yo temp outside that's messing with our temp inside so they are getting a nice soaking right now and could not make any appearances in time for today.

So enjoy and I'll be by yours, gleaning great ideas, soon enough!

Here's the FAMILY ROOM:

Not much going on here since we are training puppies, but at least I have some of my Nativity sets up. This one is 14 years old...

We got this set at Costco as our very first family gift for Christmas. It doesn't come with a star so we try to make the angel look like it's looking down from heaven and the manger all lit up, just like in the story in Luke.

The manger is only about5-6 years old. We found it in Target during our Clearance raids. LOL I love this diorama scene with the holy family and the little shepherd looking in.
Our mantle is one of my favorite places to decorate and I really went out on this one, but guess what again... I literally ran out of decorations! We've lived in apartments, almost a third smaller of this house, so between no time and no decorations, I'm quite surprised that we were able to pull this off. :-)
Back in 2008, we found a box barely noticeable among all the pickin's, this PEACE stocking holders. Perfect as we have 5 in our family! And to sweeten the deal, it was 75% off! The candles were a find last year at Jo-Ann's. The last five for less than $1 each! I love using big pinecones no matter how elegant or rustic my theme is. It defines the season for me...
Here's the banister leading upstairs. Most of my garlands are older than my youngest, and I'm quite impressed that despite several moves, they've all survived! The lightball on the table, also 14 years old. My hubby and FIL made them together the first Christmas we were married. Yes, the light-strings are that old!
For about three Decembers now, we loan out our little trees and nativity sets to our community Nativity Exhibit so these are one of the last ones to be included in the decor.
Many of my wire ribbons were muted enough to work year after year. So cool!

My village! Finally out after 3 years of being left out from lack of space... This one's in the DR. Nope, not done there yet...
And this is the foyer... I placed a mirror to reflect the front door and give my little amount of decor a bigger impact.
Oh look, poinsettias and gold sprays! LOL I love this Nativity interpretation and the muted colors go well with all the colors we use each year. This is 2 years old.

Sometimes, when inspiration hits, it hits big! The effect was much more than I was expecting! How awesome is that?!

Catching Up!

I again am playing catch up to all of you with all these household business we're attending to right now. So I thought I'd bundle up Halloween and Thanksgiving for you beautiful ladies!

Thanks again to our wonderful hosts, Susan of Between Naps on the Porch for Met Monday and Tablescape Thursday, Marty of A Stroll Thru Life for Tabletop Tuesday, Leigh of Tales of Bloggeritaville for Thrifty Thursday and Michael Lee of Designs by Gollum for Foodie Friday. So glad to be participating this week!

Alright, let's move on to the catching up part... Susan, these transformations certainly fit Met Monday.

Fall came, September 22, and we quickly dressed up our newly painted old door with Halloween and Autumn colors.

The foyer table (for Marty) had a temporary dressing as well...
Eventually after much rummaging, I managed to find my other Fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving items from the newly carved out storage, and officially welcomed the season for the second time. This shadow box done back in 2005, cost me a total of $1.50! Pretty thrifty, huh, Leigh?
Halloween this year, since it was on Sunday, meant only giving out candies, and using up our 2009 clearance finds! Still thrifty, Leigh!
Then, Susan, the foyer turned into something more sinister... Boo!
Even the candy table had its own party going on! Two tables for Marty over here! LOL
Then Thanksgiving was in the air and again the same table took on another face-just for Susan and Marty...
I emphasized Harvest time this time around...
Before the actual T-dinner, we also had another dinner we hosted. It wasn't fancy, but we had to make sure that we made the table lovely...
(The leaves, from our trees in the front yard, the floating candles, Garden Ridge, 2008, 50 cents each) Gotta love that, Leigh!
Lovely for both our guests and Susan, of course! I call this table, "A New Fall" since we are in our very own house and we can't be more excited to start the season cozy inside...
On the big day, I made sure that all were taken care of, but not over the top. I was so excited when the hubs pulled out all of my dishes from the storage and I got to see all of my choices for this year's table!

This one is called, "Thanksgiving, In and Out" because our gratitude extends to the wonderful property we purchased. Despite the wear&tear happenings, it is ours to change, update and upgrade!

To save money, I simply used flowers to dress the table and didn't fuss over the vases either, whatever was around did the trick.
I think it worked out beautifully, don't you, Susan, Leigh, Marty? How about you ladies?
We started with this beautiful Autumn soup made with butternut squash, potatoes, leek and coconut milk. It was divine! I think a Foodie like Michael Lee can appreciate this, right?

We also dressed the naturally overwhelming wall of mirrors in the dining room to look like a panoramic window seeing the tumbled leaves falling...
This year so far, we were blessed with momentous occasions: Great New Year, Valentine's was spent looking for a house, March was spent buying and closing on this house, April & May were spent on moving in, organizing and settling in, June was a double graduation time, July & August were spent on planning out college life and more renovations, and September was well, spent in Hawaii and with friends staying with us. We are blessed, happy and grateful...

Hope you all have been having a great year, or at least a great Fall season. We all have much to be thankful for and it's not even December yet!

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: (Brain is very happy with herself) No money for a centerpiece, use what's around you. Just like I did, I gathered leaves with varying colors and floated them in an oval roaster with my floating candles. I used more of the same leaves to cover the above big serving tray that only held a few things. (Ooooppps... I left the candlestick I used to light the round ones, lol) It filled up the tray and it looks like a deliberate choice! Didn't cost me a thing!

Anniversary Dinner

Hello to all again! I'm excited to be able to participate in 3 memes again today: Tablescape Thursday with Susan, Foodie Friday with Michael Lee, and Some of my Favorite Things Saturday with Laurie. Yay!

Our family and each other

Back in October 26th, 1996, Mr. Man and I entered our LDS temple in Oakland, CA and "sealed" a covenant with Heavenly Father that we will love and cherish each other for all eternity...

Well, this year, yesterday, was our 14th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. We didn't bungee jump off any cliffside or bridge, didn't seek out a fancy restaurant, no expensive gifts bought and no parties thrown. For this anniversary, we reflected on the success of our marriage and our family as well as another pledge to make it to 7 more years of happiness. At least...

Now, we enjoy life with our three children- 1 in Hawaii, 2 at home.

But before we had all three, we had our memories and possessions that reminded us of our union and all the ups and downs we endured. So this table is reflective of that...
Card table-1997, Flowers 2002, Autumn Dinnerware- 2005, Tablecloth, Birds and Flatware-2009, Glasses, Napkins, candles and holder- 2010.

We ate in our family room after the kiddos went to bed. We listened to Michael Buble and reflected on how much we still love each other and the life we are building in our new home.

Our menu and dinnerware were also a mix of old and new: The plates, 2005 and 2007; The solid red plate (Home Trend "Siena") was a gift from a young couple family friends. They were relocating and reducing so they gave us the whole set for 4!
The food- a FAVE of ours since 1996; Crabcakes, but my own recipe this year. The couscous, only tried and loved it this year. Broccoli, a staple family veggie since childhood for Mr. Man and 1987 for me. The dessert of Cream Puffs with chocolate ganache has been an anniversary staple since 2002. Homemade ganache, totally only started 2008.

So there you are, our marital journey for your enjoyment. One thing that's still and will always be... How much we are totally crazy about each other! Everyone, meet Mr. Man. My dream man... (Max's of Manila in Honolulu, Hawaii, September 2010)
and our children L-Infinity (17), J-Pony(11) and I-Dude(8). Our pure source of joy. When we look at them, they remind us how lucky we are to have found each other.

I love my life and wouldn't trade it for anything. How about you?

Strawberry Topped Cupcakes

Hello to all! It's been a while as well since I joined in Foodie Friday with Michael on Designs by Gollum, so I'm really glad that I have something delicious to share!

Every year starting in Fall, we hit the library and grab seasonal story books. I read to my children out loud, going back to cuddling and reading 101.

Well, my kids and read I this book called "Cook-a-doodle-do!" The author fashioned it after the story of the Little Red Hen where the character is a great grandson of Little Red.

With the help of his friends, a pot-bellied pig, iguana and a turtle, they managed to bake a beautiful Strawberry Shortcake!

So we printed the recipe written on the back page, but when it came to it, we didn't have the flour that it called for. So...

We found a regular cake mix and we turned them into cupcakes. We chopped up some strawberries and floated them on top of some Redi-Whip! Yum!

That is my hubby's cool hands. I had to quickly snap it up before he ate his cupcake. He loves strawberries on whipped cream!
And this one's mine... Oh, it was worth the wait from taking pictures. (I think they're both a bit grainy because I was not paying attention to the setting, I was too busy imagining how delicious they would be! LOL)

Hawaiian Table Splash

Hello everyone! I know, I know... Long time between posts. Been really busy so I hope you can forgive me. I'm still working on getting all of my dishes out of the storage place, but I promise, I'll have more posts soon enough.

This is the buffet table I put together for my daughter's "Off to College" (Brigham Young University in Oahu, HI) Farewell Dinner back in August. And since I'm busy, busy...

I'm participating in Tabletop Tuesday with Marty, Thrifty Thursday with Leigh and Tablescape Thursday with Susan, of course!

This is definitely fitting to all three memes- there's a suped-up table for Marty's :-); I only had to buy the pineapple ($3), votive holders (75% off), hibiscus ($5 for 20) and lanterns (75% off), everything else, I've had so that's thrifty enough for Leigh's; and it's a tablescape for Susan's meme! I'm so clever sometimes, it scares me. (Oh, look at that, I even made a Halloween pun. Ha!) Enjoy!

I had some shells and candles...
Soft blue Ikea napkins and Asian lanterns...
I had pebbles, pineapple, bamboo, hibiscus, too!
So under the candlelight,
and with colorful pearls and pebbles...
I set the stage for some Hawaiian buffet dining!
Afterwards, when everyone was pull of roasted pulled pork, chicken adobo, lumpias, noodles, fruits and steamed rice... I made sure that the pineapple took a freezer nap, the shells, pebbles and pearls were back in their boxes;
and the candles, bamboo and dinnerware were all put away-- A WEEK LATER!

What? It was a beautiful table!

A Little Sad Now That I'm Back...

Yes... I'm a little sad... That my busy schedule also led to some loss of dear followers. But I assure you, I haven't lost my touch even in the midst of a chaotic unpacking into a new, and finally a house, home.

You know I'm all about THRIFT with STYLE. So of course, our 4th of July table wouldn't be any less than that! Brain would not let me! :-)

Whatever I had available from the few boxes I was able to unpack

And since all that I used have been with used for other tablescapes, it cost me NOTHING! How's that for thrifty, Leigh?

(Psst! Psst! See those lamps there? Got them from Lowe's for $7.50 each! Originally, $40! The plants and pots, all on clearance, too! Told you I still got it. LOL)
I used my red check tablecloth and a floral dusty blue and white flat sheet. To simulate the first USA flag, I used a glass table top surrounded by tea lights. The centerpiece floral arrangement, just of grass blades to remember the simplicity of the land at the time it was being fought for.
I used plain white salad bowls, forks and float mugs and red, white and blue starry napkins I got last year.

I used just what was available and stayed within the scheme of the theme. (Look, I'm even rhyming for this meme!)

Happy Thursday, everyone! I'm so glad to be joining you today! Now that I'm home again, I can definitely blog more!

So how do you get back in table designing after months of absence? You come up with something QUICK, BEAUTIFUL AND ETHEREAL! Nothing short of magical, right?

Leigh, Susan, our dear lovely hosts... You and our readers are probably thinking: "What could she possibly mean?" Well, sometimes when you dine, only just the right setting makes it.

Is it expensive? NO. Is it too unique? NO. Is it easy? YES!

This design inspiration came from IKEA. Yep... IKEA! I found this 79-cent a piece sandy beige dinnerware set and these sky blue and bamboo green napkins. The glasses, TARGET. The utensils, Hampton "LACE". The candles, IKEA again!

So you see? With just the right combination, color and lighting, it's just like dining up in HEAVEN while on EARTH... ENJOY!
Come and sit down, the menu is divine! Why? Because it is exactly what you wish it to be!
I'll take this seat. Did you decide on your first course yet?
Oh, isn't it so romantic and uplifting? I feel like I'm dining amongst the stars...
The bamboo trio and the big gray patched up candles "ground" the whole look.
I only used napkins and candles to add the sparkle and extra color (sky blue). A new twist to a heavenly dining experience, eh? Ehhh?
Now let's adjust our eyes and see how "bright" our night really is. With you as my guest, who needs Superstars?
Notice how I played up the circles and twists? It gives it an "eternal", I mean, enduring appeal. I'd definitely do this table again.
Just close your eyes and think of the "nectar of the Gods" you wish poured on your glass to savor.
You see that stack of dishes? We at least will dine on a "trinity" of deliciousness. I can't wait to see what appears on yours...
Mmm... That was definitely amazing! Let's enjoy the atmosphere and just be grateful... for being full! LOL

House Adventures #1: Master Disaster

Hello everyone! Happy Spring! Can't believe April's almost done!

So sorry haven't been posting for a while. As you know, we moved and so being new homeowners, we are delving into completely new territory. Hence my post today...

This is my new Master Bedroom; spacious, raised ceiling, two separate walk-ins, plush carpeting and huge windows and a bay. Lovely, lovely, lovely...

I was sold on this room. So of course, I took this picture. Making sure I get to show off the raised ceiling housing the original ceiling fan. It works, so no hurry to change it on our part.

Well... The day after we got the keys, we met with our ceiling retexturing guy (popcorn gotta go!), we all went up to the master to talk options. Mr. Man noticed that one of the blades were tilted down so he went up to it. Before he can touch it, it broke! And fell just barely missing his head! (I guess the poor fan couldn't handle another decade of use (LOL). Actually, I was secretly hoping to change all the old ones ASAP, so talk about great coinkidink!)
So 5 becomes 4, but since it broke at the arm, it became instantly unusable... *mad face*

What to do? (or should I say... What Now?) :-) No problem. I had one I owned in Arizona, in the storage. So off we go there to fix this dilemma. We get there ready only to realize that it's buried way back and don't know exactly where! Nice...

What Now? ("Brain" says, That's ok, I can wait. Summer's not for a few months away and the weather's been cool. We'll just open all the windows. Then my mom calls while we were dining out with the whole family with some good news!)

My F&MIL's were over for two weeks to help us move (LOVE THEM) and they agreed we can wait until we can grab the fan out of the storage. But we were all so happy when we realized Mr. Man and I didn't have to wait at all! Off to Western Union!

So... Presto-chang-0! With my mom's housewarming gift, we were off to the nearest Lowe's to pick out a new ceiling fan! I followed my Mama's instructions: "Get exactly the one I want." (Listen to your moms, they know what they're talking about. LOL) And with my mom in-law helping to make sure Mr. Man got to see what he's doing and that he didn't fall (I was the photographer) while Mr. Man's gladly installed it, we now enjoy a new ceiling fan! Yay!!!

It's the one we both fell in love with the last time we were at Lowe's.
He assembled the whole fan on the floor and installed it as one piece. It was heavy because of the separate motors for the fan and light. And as a surprise gift to me, hubby sprung for a remote control! He's a keeper!
There's my wonderful MIL. She's such a great lady. (Glad my ILs came and helped us pack, move, pack... Good thing, we moved only 2 minutes away from our old apartment.)
And here's my new fan! (see the antenna for the remote peeking?) I love those blades!

And there you have it... Master Disaster and how we "morphed" a problem into a solution!

I've been needing new pots for a while now (like years now) but am not wanting a set to replace again so I set my sights on Calphalon at Kohl's. Well, last week, we went but didn't buy anything because it wasn't on sale though they gave out "discount cards of up to 15%". Tonight, we almost didn't again until we saw a great incentive that we completely didn't notice last week.

Isn't that an amazing deal?! And... I also had a new discount card, 15% again, So, I actually beat the online sale price, plus I got something FREE!!!

I also had a great experience of helping Kohl's sell a 13-piece set of Farberware cookware that has a $20 mail-in rebate! At the register, the same saleslady, who happens to be the Manager of the Housewares Department(of course I didn't know that at the time), was the same woman who was trying to sell this lady the Farberware set! I helped explain that the Farberware line has been around and they are the best for affordable non-stick cookware. The customer didn't understand the rebate so I explained that too and she bought it! So again, at the register, the manager recognized me and greeted me warmly plus... she declared that we make a great team then whispered, "I'm looking for someone, you want a part-time job?" Now that's a compliment! Yeah!

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: ("Brain" is excited, very excited!) When holidays come around, don't be afraid to incorporate simple pieces with lavish but inexpensively acquired pieces. It will give your table a classic and yet contemporary look that is constantly known to surface in design and home magazines!

The Packing Has Begun...

I have been hinting of moving for a while now, but as of last week, the planning of packing and actual packing has commenced. And to be safe, I started with my dishes and decorative items that can be deemed "fragile".

With that said, I won't be around for a while... (I'm so sad...)

We are trying to organize and pack at the same time. On top of that, the hubs just installed Windows 7 in our comps and is still in the process of installing Microsoft Office and Picasa for our pics. So... until that's all sorted out and the packing's gotten under control (kiddos slaving over their excess stuff for their Spring Break- mwahh ha ha ha!), all I can do is maybe visit from time to time.

Until then... (I hope you won't forget me)

For example, your dishes are solid bright red but you want an airy feel of Spring time. Easy-all you have to do is use your dishes, but use napkins and vinyl mats that have pastel shades. By enveloping your bright colors in pastel, you achieve the same look and feel you want with a shot of color that represents you!

After relinquishing my table from our organizing and decluttering projects, I turned it from a messy heap to something wonderful-twice! For your Met Monday pleasure, I present you not one, but two tablescapes!

THEME:
"Asian Romance"

INSPIRATION:
Target's "Red Solstice" Dinnerware set
I knew that we were going to celebrate the Chinese New Year and since it will also be Valentine's Day, I went with Red and Black!

It took a while to find all the pieces, but I started back in January. As you know, most dinnerware sets at Target rarely go on sale, but this Red Solstice set was at 30% off and since I've waited three years for them to be discounted, I gave in... (I know, it's not my minimum 40% off preference but sometimes compromises have to be made for the things you've been patient with...)

If you've brushed up on your Chinese table etiquette lately, you'll find that minimalism is the key; where "No Muss, No Fuss" reigns. So I did the same with my table. Harmony reigns on a traditional Chinese table and I achieved that by not varying the heights too much, I kept everything low and the colors uniform. The tablecloth is a huge black denim remnant fabric I've had so that's FREE!

I used lowball smoke glasses from Libbey, aptly called, Classic Smoke,
Red is a very auspicious and powerful color for the Chinese, and since it is their New Year, I honored that with tealights undulating on the center representing fireworks and ferocity of a tiger and the red ribbon symbolizing the dragon.

The napkins with Asian motif were from Tuesday Morning last year... 19 cents a napkin. It was a perfect accompaniment to complete the Chinese air of the overall design without giving it too much of a Western take.

The black wood chopsticks, a combo of the Japanese and Chinese styles were from our local Asian market... $2.50 for 5 pairs.
The placemats were my everyday ones I got from Walmart back in 2008.
I love this shadow shot, it reminds me of the typical red Chinese lanterns that are quite visible this time of year...

Right after my idea "ding!" with my Morrocan bedroom, I was inspired to tackle more Valentine's Day ideas. So here's the other tablescape!

THEME:
"Just The Two of Us"

INSPIRATION:
"Hugging Couple" Statue from Ross
On the same table, I changed it up to accomodate a more romantic tete-a-tete... Back in December, I saw these plates in Kohl's that for the longest time, were on sale for 50% off but they weren't moving much (yes, I went back several times... lol)
It has a beautiful damask floral design in matte gray finish on creamy white, finished with gold rim. When I first saw this set, I fell in love! So of course, it was on my mind to use it for today!

I also have this very fluid pearlescent purple statue of a hugging couple from Ross (2008), for $15. It inspired me to use it as my centerpiece because it gave away the motif of the table without much else needed to support it.
I only used a few and staggered red glass mosaic votive candle holders to illuminate the statue and table.

The red check tablecloth, a 75% off find at my local Kroger's-$5.00. The goblets were my Luigi Bormioli set that I've had since 1996. On top, of each plate is a 75% off Target find last December- clear salad plates with a silver rim. It complimented the utensils, Lace by Hampton.

This plate is called, Spirit of the Season by St. Nicholas Square. On December 30th, we hit Kohl's for some much needed winter clothing, then of course, I had to see the housewares clearance section. Lo and behold, 9 of these were at the very bottom of a non-descript rack, not tagged at all! So I approached a couple of sales associate and they scanned at 70% off. I thought, good but you know me, I always have to ask...

So I did. "Well, since these are the last 9 plates you have, and you'll be putting it on 80% off soon, can you just give it to me tonight?" I was stunned when they said YES! I headed to the Customer Service and had the discount redone there but since they messed up, only giving it to me for 73% off, I came back and again was floored that they gave it to me for a total of 88% off!!! I paid $1.68 each after tax! Yeah!!!

TABLESCAPING IDEAS: ("Brain" was busy...) Use the colors of the theme you are going for to save money and not worry about being bogged down with the typical symbols of a particular theme.

A Bit of Morroco for Valentine's

Hello everyone and HAPPY (almost) VALENTINE'S DAY!!! Thanks for hosting Laurie, this is so fun!

At first, for weeks, I decided on different tablescapes to represent the upcoming V-Day on Laurie's party. Then time got away from me... With different projects and looking for a house for our pending move in August, things just piled up. But one thing for sure, I wanted to end our winter doldrums... From burgundy plaid flannel to... a bit of Morocco!

Not even our sudden onset of "whole day of snow" can dampen my resolve to join in on Laurie's partay!
I love the vibrant colors of Morocco, but I also know that I just want "punches" of those vibrant hues so I went with shimmery minty blue, a hint of silver, pewter, beige and brown. What do you think?
I got all of these accessories at Ross, the flower print, stayed because it gave just the right punch of red to draw your eye up.
Since I couldn't change out my "country-ish" headboard, I chose to compliment it with calming shades... My inspiration, this pair of embroidered flower heads on silvery minty blue pillows.
The Morocco bit, are on each night stand. I've seen the morrocan decor- layers of colors- complimentary and bright so I did the same thing for this vignette! (modern conveniences like cordless phone bases, have a place in Morocco, too! lol)
Here's proof that the vignette is in the same room. ;-)
Just by candlelight...

I didn't use to be a big Valentine's Day aficionado, and I'm still not, but once in a while... Those romance genes kick in and the bedroom gets a sizzling make-over!

We went to Kroger tonight and noticed their 75% off deals for their Holiday items. In one aisle, big discount signs shouted the deals waiting ahead, so naturally, my hubby and I, partook. Well... I guess their own people didn't know what those signs meant since only 1 of these three were on sale correctly! We had to call in the manager twice to figure out what I already knew- I was right, they were not! In the end, we got our money back and sincere apologies. What else could a girl want, right? :-D

Christmas Memory

Hello to all! I haven't participated in Beverly's PS for sometime now, but I really like her theme this season so I knew I had to be there...

She asked us to share a childhood holiday memory and this is one I'll always treasure...

I lived with my dad in Manila from 12-15 yrs old. During those years, during Christmas time, just after the midnight mass, throngs of Catholic parishioners gather round these snacks carts that sell "puto bumbong". They are sticky, delicious, purple-colored glutinous rice flour, and steamed in slim bamboo tubes, type of delicacy that's unique to the Philippines. They are topped with grated coconut and sugar and served on strips of banana leaves.

My friends and I would carol each night starting December 10th and I would save my portion so I'd be ready to buy one. Often, I would beg my dad to give me a similar amount to what I earned so I can buy two! They are my favorite Christmas treat! Since the vendors are more prolific at midnight at Christmas Day, we would help each other wake up at 11:30 and walk all the way to the church where the vendors are lined up for the after mass mob.

They are the highlight of those Christmases for me and I wish that I can taste them once more...

Hello everyone! Yes, I'm still alive and kickin'... Just got real crazy over here but it will turn around soon (I hope).

Thought I'd share this year's Thanksgiving decor, starting with my mantle. (Don't mind the lights, it's for the kiddos.)

The hubs and I managed to dig out some of my past T-day decor so I gathered all of my bright foliage and did this!
I don't know if you can see it, but the centerpiece is a purple cornucopia. I just layered everything that I owned and I think it worked out great. What do you think?
I didn't have anywhere to put my husband's Mt. Bachelor print, so I "semi" covered it up with this suede-like pretty placemat I got from Walmart last year. The candles were from Target back in 2007, while the candlesticks were from Ross last January.
On each end, I placed a framed picture that means a lot to me. This one is of me and my first daughter (Nov '96), L-Infinity when I married my husband Mr. Man back in October 1996.
This one is of my Dad's; it's the only clear picture I have of him. Both pictures anchor the mantle to complete my gratitude. Now I have three children, married 13 years, and just plain happy and grateful. :-D

Ok, onto the table...
THEME:
"Color ME Grateful"

INSPIRATION:
Different shades of Fall decor
So you seen my "ORANGE" side, but now here's the more "EARTHY (browns, burgundy, moss greens) side of FALL... I chose all the dishes I own that can compliment my tablecloth (Kohl's; 80% off); runner (Kohl's; 65% off). Yes, again, I regale you with my "Pretty, Inexpensive" signature of a tablescape! I accented it with some orange to pick up the mantle and the orange in the runner.

I layered my Canopy "Golden Wheat", ONLY Gibson "Wheat", Food Network "Red Currant" plates and Thomson "Bianca" bowl to make my placesetting. I found my Target find napkins and just placed one inside each bowl to "pretty it up".

(ooopppsss... I forgot to place a napkin on that placesetting. Pretend you didn't notice, ok? Thanks!)

A little too busy again so I thought I could just regale you with delectably spooky inspirations for Halloween! *cackling* It's FREE (being thrifty) and CREATIVE (inspiring tables)...

How to Make a Halloween Tablescape (E How dot com)

Things You'll Need:
A roll of cork, approximately one quarter inch thick
Black poster paint
White poster paint
One foam brush
A retractable utility knife or equivalent
Fake rubber snakes, bugs and spiders
An old glove
One old newspaper or magazine
A piece of thick cardboard or a cutting mat
A vinyl tablecloth
Double stick tape
A costume ring or bracelet
Silk or paper leaves

Place the vinyl tablecloth onto the table where you want to make the Halloween tablescape. This will be used to protect the table. An old sheet or old tablecloth may also be used. Place strips of double-stick tape on the vinyl tablecloth. The double-stick tape will help keep the cork layer secure.

Unroll the cork onto the dining room table. Place the cork in a horizontal direction to achieve a flat surface. The cork may be unrolled just in the center of the table, to create a Halloween tablescape that will also accommodate dinner guests. Or, place unrolled cork on all surfaces of the table to create a complete Halloween tablescape.

Cut any excess pieces of cork from around the edges of the table. There will be more cutting required if the table is round, than if it is square. Use the retractable utility knife to carefully trim off the excess cork. Save the larger cork pieces for other projects.

Create openings in the cork for a three-dimensional effect. Draw a square near the center of the cork. From the center of the square, draw a large letter "x" which creates four triangles. Cut along the letter "x" leaving the outside of the square intact. Fold back the cork to create a creepy opening in the Halloween tablescape. Make more openings like this in different sizes.

Paint the cork with the black paint using the foam brush. The paint can be dabbed on or brushed on with a dry bush. Brush on white to create a cork surface that is a blend of white, black and gray. Use a rag or cloth to dab off excess paint.
Stuff the glove with pieces of crumpled newspaper. Paint the glove black. Add a piece of costume jewelry to the glove. Set the glove aside until it's dry.

Decorate the Halloween tablescape with the fake bugs, spiders and the hand. Stick the fake creatures slightly under the cork and through the openings in the cork. They will look as if they are crawling out of the ground. Also set the hand in the largest whole, to look like it is reaching out from the ground.

Scatter silk or paper leaves around the openings, and the table. Add any other Halloween gourds or miniature pumpkins to the Halloween tablescape.

New cutters from Walmart
I didn't have any real rhyme or reason for this table, I just played around with the colors and the great buys I found from Ross and Walmart like the cute cookie cutters! I wanted to show them off somehow.

Here are the "stars" (get it they're bright like stars?) of the show!

I placed a tealight on top of each kitchen towel inside each cutter. The towels each have a different look (Ross, $4.99 for 3). I used my red Canopy "Cranberry" dinner plates (Walmart, $1 clearance each) and a black denim fabric I also got from Walmart where I got a 50-cent a yard discount because it was the last of the roll...

Or a gravestone for sure.
Heres' another pumpkin for those awesome jack-o's...
And last but not least, a skull form to round out the pack!

Each of the cutters were only $2-3 per set of 3, at Walmart. The tealights were from IKEA, 100 for $2.99 only! And the glasses and the candle holders, I got them from Marshall's and Hobby Lobby, respectively, for a deep discount, too!

Hi everybody, I'm back! Well, temporarily anyway... Found some time and space tonight to do a Fall tablescape and it just happens to be Thrifty and Tablescape Thursday as well as a Fall Party! Lucky me!

THEME:
"Fall Is Here"

INSPIRATION:
Clearance Fall Tablecloth
I found this tablecloth at Kohl's a few months back for 80% off or $2.99 only!!! I was so happy when I found it but quickly blanked out on what to do with it. Then this whole uninvited break comes along and I completely forgot about it until just recently when I found it in one of our closets.

The Gibson "Wheat" dinnerware (I'm still not a fan of Gibson; just sayin') beautifully contrasts against the full pattern of the tablecloth. And... I only paid 99 cents each for those dinner plates! My thoughts, "voila!" a great tablescape!

Then there's my another Kohl's 80% find- Food Network's "Currant" dinnerware. Paid only $1.59 per salad plate!
Here's the tablescape. Informal yet with understated elegance. How?
All the pieces used are found on clearance or dirt cheap.

Two colors of paper napkins, purposely brighter than the tablecloth to simulate lightness or "floating" effect. The iron candleholder, also 80% off at Kohl's...
Gorham "Rose Serenade" crystal goblets, only $4 each, normally $15...
The fun setting of the utensils, Hampton's "Lace", deliberate to give each setting its own spotlight. (sorry the crystals are not polished, didn't have time.)
Didn't use any placemats or chargers to give it a more casual and rustic feel. Just like autumn...
Would you like to sit down? Choose a spot and enjoy a feast of your own choice abundant this season...

Ok... This is getting ridiculous. I have a full house, I mean apartment unit with one of my teen daughter's friends, now living with us. My dining room, groaning under extra food and supplies, my coffee table, lost under extra boxes and my time, totall spent on catching on homework and errands! *sigh*

I am working on getting my Fall stuff out of the storage and stealing a few hours to get a tablescape or two, done for your viewing pleasures. UNTIL THEN... I'll be here, at home, trying not to fall flat on my face from being too exhausted.

TABLESCAPING IDEA: ("Brain" says... zzzzz...) Tablecloth got you baffled between fabric and vinyl? Have little ones? Then go for vinyl tablecloth with fabric like textures on it and subtle designs. Looks expensive and pretty but durable and checkbook friendly!

A Little Too "Cloche"...

As of late, time is just not on my side, but I couldn't break a promise to join a great party, right? Right! So, though I couldn't afford any real cloche out there, I did manage to find a great alternative. Yay!!!

I needed something small but worthy of using a cloche on so I thought and I thought... Hmmm... Aha! My most important bling! Not money wise, but sentiments wise.

See, the ring is my "upgraded-after 10 years of marriage" wedding ring (and cause I lost the original one. *very sad face*; my mom's ruby earrings for my eldest and the gold bracelet that my baby sister gave me, just because... It's been raining here so the lighting is just horrible.

See how they look in my cloche.

Ha ha, it's an upside down crystal water goblet called "Rose Serenade" by Gorham.

Doesn't it look like a fancy cloche when you don't see the stem?

Proof time... Before it was washed. Found it at Tuesday Morning. Details, next Thursday. But knowing me, I got it at a great deal!

Getting a Handle on Things

Hello all! First off, apologies to my readers for not having anything new. And for the lack of visits lately. Our new schedule is slowly coming along and school is transitioning smoothly for me. Posting will be more frequent soon enough. (Yay!) But I did have some hard facts to face:

We are moving next year, so no major household shopping for me this year, except for a cloche for Marty's party on the 11th. I wouldn't miss that again! (Yes ladies, I am in pain not being able to bring home unbelievable deals, but I promised the hubs, so there.)

I can only post for both TTs, and SS and occasionally on OW, FF and SF only because of Family time rearrangement.

I'm focusing on learning how to bake better sandwich bread as we are trying to stretch every penny for the said upcoming move. (don't know where yet)

I'm not able to keep my personal challenge from my own family's blog, so I know keeping up with the daily memes here would be next to impossible. (But I'm working on it!)

I'm helping a friend with meal planning to stretch her budget so that's where some of the attention is portioned out.

Oh how I miss all of you, but I do need to have a realistic view of our family life this year. Busy, busy, busy!

Today is "Spring Fling" Foodie Friday!

What did you make?

First of all, I want to thank everyone who took the time to visit my dear friend Ann (Hansonpatch) of "Three Little Girls" yesterday during both Thursday memes. We became friends a while back in Arizona, just before we moved here to Texas. She's a fairly new blogger and she loves getting visitors as much as I do! ;-) She is a wonderful woman and mother like all of you and she is a perpetual learner. She also just recently decided that she will homeschool her lovely girls. (I wanted to do that but am afraid my children are way into social things right now that they might hang me upside down over the notion. LOL) That means everytime she meets someone, she makes it a point to learn something from that person.

Yesterday, you just filled her mind with awesome tablescaping ideas! I bet she was just in heaven! You all rock!

And again, an armful of thanks to all who participated in the Thrifty Thursday normally hosted by Leigh. She would be thrilled to know that so many of us found great deals on such awesome treasures! I can't wait until she comes back blogging away about her vacay adventures!

******************************************What does one do when there's simply no time and a hungry family is starting to revolt? You bribe them with an easy but deadly yummy dessert!

Got kids that would rather not use a plate to hold their dessert? Make the container edible!

I call this my "Sweetly Kissed" Biscuit Cups because... it is easy to make and oh so yummy! Each biscuit dough disc from a can of Pilsbury Grands were flattened and molded on to a cupcake pan and filled with a delectable cream cheese filling:

Preheat oven to 400 deg

"Sweetly Kissed" Filling

1 brick of Kraft Neufchatel cheese or 1/3 less fat cream cheese
1/2 cup honey
1 tsp cinnamon

a small pinch of salt

Blend together until well mixed. Taste and adjust.

Spoon into each biscuit cup dough and bake for 10 minutes or until puffed and lightly browned.

Take it out and transfer onto a cookie sheet. Bake for another 2-3 minutes on 400 deg.

Serve slightly warm topped with a tall tower of low-fat whipped cream and cinnamon sprinkles. Any kid can just grab it and eat it without fear of needing to stay put. Why because they'll eat the cream off first and eat inside out! Yum! Of course, you can do the following presentation if you are a proper consumer. (Nah, after I took this picture, I ate a strawberry, took a bite while holding the "cup" in one hand, strawberry, a bite and so forth and so on... You think you can handle that?) :P

I also guarantee you that when you take a bite of the whole filling and biscuit with or without whipped cream is like a "sweet kiss"! (mwah!)

You like the plate? You've all seen it! It's Corelle's "Shadow Iris". I've had this set since 1997 and they all still look fairly new even with three voracious eaters I call my children. ;-)

TABLESCAPING IDEA: (Brain had an idea burst) No matching placemats for a big table? No sweat, color coordinate! We tend to pick up the same shade or hue values so it doesn't matter, especially if you have an all white dinnerware, it looks modern, fun and chic!

It would seem, to further complicate things, this computer problem is now fixed, but my schedule just got crazier!

Between PTA audits, school shopping and registration (for me- Sociology & Advanced Excel to earn further teaching credits), reading programs, cleaning, laundry, organization, errands, menu planning and learning all kinds of tricks to stretch Lincoln further, I only have time to keep up with one blog, our family one (darn daily blogging challenge!)

A Seaside Story (On Your Table)

Since I've been away awhile, let me welcome you back to my blog with a little story brought in by the breeze of the nearby shore...

THEME:
"On the Water's Edge"
INSPIRATION:
A bag of shells
One day, out in the blue horizon, a family spotted a passing sailboat. Her name, SS Chandy. But what they didn't know, was that the occupants of the sailboat were admiring their "on the water's edge" picnic they were having!
See? They were so close that the high tide came in and crept up under some of their plates! Look at the beautiful shells they were able to collect with each lap of the water...
As it got dark, they erected three candles, to light their evening picnic and stabilized each one with the big shells they found. The crew of SS Chandy was enthralled...
They seem to love shells of all kind! And they were even thrilled that a starfish joined the group and made him a focal point on this mollusk centerpiece!
A big scallop shell, various curly ones holding down the napkins that seem to emulate the various seaweed they passed by.
Here are more shells... from different species of mollusks!
SS Chandy focused on the very end of the picnic area and admired this big scallop shell. Oh how, they wanted to eat some now... and all manners of delicious seafood!
Each plate seemed to have their own shells as a napkin anchor and how the crew liked the utensils were not plastic at all.
There were so many different kinds and the colors, amazing! Black, green, white, tan, peach, purple, gray, brown, coral and hints of yellow... a rainbow out of the sea!
Their lenses couldn't tell very well, but he thought that this shell below, had a glint of purple while the spiral one was a soothing shade of peach and tan...
Then he realized that the family looked back at the sailboat the whole time, admiring the blue sea it's sitting on. How they wished they could yell out and invite them over...
The family took a closer look... a white sailboat against the majestic turqoise below, a scene only a perfect day can concoct, they thought.
The sailboat, was impressed also with the glasses, from the boat, it looked like freshly heated grains of sand to form a drinking vessel just for this occasion.
In the end, the family thoroughly enjoyed their surf-n-turf meal; curious about the people on the sailboat. As for the crew of SS Chandy, they longed to get to shore and experience a whole new adventure, a picnic "on the water's edge"...

Hope you liked my story... I missed you all, but our computer is still really acting up and since my teen needs a computer for before school things, I can only post for a while and maybe sneak in a few visits. I can't wait til' it's all fixed and I can keep blogging!

The plates I used is my Mulberry "Mocha Swirl" plates. It's spiral and iridescent look reminds of a "mother of pearl" which made it perfect for this setting. The utensils, Hampton "Lace". Napkins, Home, "Bamboo Garden" and the placemats, dark brown woven seagrass! The glasses, a wonderful find at Marshall's...

To our lovely hosts, Susan and Leigh, my utmost thanks for keeping me on my toes. This tablescape was done in honor of our company, Michelle, leaving to go back home. She and my middle daughter helped me put this table together.

My Thrifty Thursday focus, the shells! They are from the Philippines, found them at Ross for only $5.99! I saw smaller ones at Walmart being sold for $10 so for the size difference and where they came from, I say that is a thrifty take on a major score!

Please be patient with me, August is our whacked out crazy month. LOL

Friday was great but like the rest of this week, crammed with things to do. So going to Petland was a little bit of a respite.

Inside, we saw... parakeets of beautiful colors. That teal one in the middle is the one I want!

If my hubby has his way, he'd snag this English bulldog puppy... Isn't he cute?
Here's my son, with a juvenile cockatiel. I don't know which one is more darling. LOL
This white parrot just hung out there on the ledge and would let others pet him without flinching.
Here's a cute bunny for my little cutie!
We went back to the parakeets and look what we found, kissing ones!

Ok, so this is supposed to be the last "Christmas in July", so I'm a little sad... But this "Sparkly Kiss of Red" table certainly put a smile on my face... I used all that I can gather together that seem fitting for Christmas as quickly as I can, but I took longer taking pictures! Isn't that always the case? :-)
I used my "Snowfall Splendor" plates and added a double star gold glittered ornament on top. The napkins and few touches of red among all the gold & white gave it a touch of romance and magic that is always apparent at Christmas time.
Here are all the other bling, crystal and glass. I love my "Rose Serenade" Gorham goblets!
Here's the close-up of the double star ornament...
And the napkin... I sprinkled some of the glitter on the table, but you couldn't see them... Oh, well! Oh! The napkins, paper, and only $1.99 for 16 pcs at Tuesday Morning! It's an orchid print with butterflies with gold touches and edging. It was perfect!Can't forget the "artsy" shot. LOL
Or the "on the table" shot. ;-)
Here's the whole table. I only participated for three weeks so that's three tables, three looks. I can't wait until Christmas!

A Little Sparkly Dust?

It's another week of "Christmas in July" with Felecia, our host who just loves Christmas all year round. This week, since I'm on vacation (and having so much fun...) I decided to share one sparkly holiday decor that I did for my teen daughter's "White Elephant" Party back in Arizona. We had one each December, for the last three years we lived there.

This is called Holiday Sparkle because the snowflakes had iridescent glitter and the gold wired ribbon was sparkly. It was the focal point for...

... this table centerpiece! I created my own glittered glass ball ornaments by swirling paints in them with glitter. So easy! The hurricanes were from the previous thanksgiving and the flower rings and linens, all deep, deep, clearance priced!
Hope you enjoyed my little sparkly holiday memory... It was a good year!

Since it's also Saturday, we get to join our other lovely host, Christine for some sightseeing! Last Monday, my in-laws took us to the Bingham Copper Mines where 17% of the world's copper is extracted from Utah's Bingham Canyon. It is currently operated by Kinecott Mining Co.

It also happened to be just a few minutes drive from where they live!

Here's the fam looking down into the mine, over 120 years old!
With enough zoom power, Mr. Man was able to show us a digger...
I took a perspective shot for how big the "delivery" trucks are. You'll see one soon...
There you see the bottom of the mine... More digging!
Oh look! There's a school bus touring the mine. See how little it is compared to the "delivery" trucks? With the naked eye, it looked like an ant! LOL
Here's a piece of Molybdenite that they normally find there along with copper, gold and silver!
Here's one of the many display cases of the items used or found in this mine. They have a whole visitor's center on the site for the curious visitors like us! Beautiful museum!
Here's one of the "delivery trucks". I call them that because they "deliver" up the extracted dirt back up to the processing plants that separate the ores from regular earth! They create so much dust that so often, a watering truck follows or precedes them. We sure had an eyeful of how a mine operates at the source! So cool!
In the museum, they've found dinosaur bones and mouth fragments, just 70 feet down! Amazing huh?

Ok, I found some time to post, so I wanted to share the table I quickly put together while here at the wonderful home of my parent-in-laws.

THEME:
"A Hint of Southeast Asia"
INSPIRATION:
The Asian Melamine Soup bowl set we gave them
I used the bowl set we gave them several years ago as centerpiece as they also functioned as serveware for a Filipino dish I made.
You see the beautiful Blue and Orange design? I haven't seen those in a while so glad that we found them then as I just love how they look. I was making all the dishes, so I quickly set the tablescape and opted for the paper napkins and simple placesetting. (ooopppsss... I forgot to put away the extra napkins and Mr. Man didn't either. LOL)
There were 7 of us eating, so I had my husband take these photos above and here's what we had... Two kinds of Jasmine rice, white and brown, three veggies and "Bistek" or the Filipino interpretation of Beef Steak (center bowl). My in-laws request this dish whenever we come and I'm glad that they do as it is also much requested in my own family. It is simply yummy!

For dessert, I had the kids make brownies and we had Brownie a la mode with strawberries and optional almond slices. We loved it and to top off the night, we watched, "Wall-E". Family time, you can't beat it!

Leigh, my TT for you is this set, since I used it for FREE and Susan, thanks for giving me the motivation to do tablescaping even when I'm not at home. LOL Thank you both for being wonderful hostesses!

It's Sunday again and I get to relive another fave post, thanks to our host, Chari, who knows just what we like to do on Sundays... Reflect...

I can't help but miss my old Oak table when I look back at my tablescapes in the past, but I know she's in a good home- my next door neighbor's parents!

From February 6, 2009

After 11 years of beautiful tablescaping adventures, my little fam of 5 say goodbye to our old and big solid oak table (*sob*). Our dining area is too small, the kids kept whacking the rounded edges and access to the kitchen when we're entertaining is almost impossible! Who wants that, right? (*sob*) Even though I love that table (*sob*) I have to think of all the bruises, stubbed toes, ripped stitches from sleeves, the squeezing (oh, those painful squeezes just to get to the other side)(*sob*).
Anyway... (still sobbing) I knew that I wanted a more Asian decor without the stereotypical little tokens associated with an Asian home. After all, I am also part Spanish (Europe, Spain), so I can't go too ethnic on both or my home will fall under eclectic and that's just not my style!

No ma'am! So... when we saw this new one, I fell in love with the color, look and the slimmer figure (now if only I can slim down that quick then we're set! I wish!)

As we said buh-bye to the ole' oakey, we say hello to our new Rubberwood dark chocolate Pagoda 6-pc set from Cost Plus World Market! We picked it up last Monday morning and it was heavy! (Good thing dh is so up to the task with his mus-kles!)

Ready to take a look-see? Are ya? Alright, here they are... (old and new of course- gotta build up the thrill factor, lol)

My ole' oakey is off to a wonderful couple who's been looking for someone like her... She's not old, the warehouse we got her from gave us a 50-year minimum lifespan, so she's still a tween (*sob*).

I just love this set!!!
It was 53% off in store (that's how we bought it) and would have been 65% off online (but they didn't want to honor the paper ad)
It's a sturdy and beautiful table
(four legs with brace, oh yeah, it's not going anywhere!)
4 chairs and a bench!
(I've always wanted one...)

A Little CIJ, SS and Q&A

We all know that Christmas comes with its own symbolism and commercialism. But if you really want to see the magic of Christmas, even in the scorcher month of July, you have to see the colors... Not just any colors, the three main ones, "red, white, and green"... There is nothing so obvious and beautiful than these three colors when thinking of Christmas, so for this week's "CIJ" with Felecia, I present to you...

THEME:
"The Christmas Magic's in its Colors"
INSPIRATION:
Red, White & Green
To me, Christmas is a time of reverence and gratitude so when I was thinking of what to put together, I didn't think of the usual adornments, but rather, I focused on the colors and what they meant...
Christmas time is a gift or rather to reflect on the greatest gift man ever received so I made the kitchen towel/napkin look like a long red gift box with two festive bows "melting" into the bowl. Exactly how I feel, I melt with gratitude during Christmas time.
Everything is focused on the main colors of Christmas, true that we have expanded on that to include all colors for whimsy, but when we think of Christmas, these colors surface to the top...
I opted to use something dark to hold the tealights to highlight this time of year is when we should have hope for mankind and within our own hearts...
I think it communicated "Christmas" well enough without the obvious "hallmarks", don't you?
Ok, let's see what this holder is made of... It's got three leaves with a bird on top of the branch they share! Yes folks, in other parts of the country or the world for that matter, birds and trees of all kinds get to enjoy Christmas, too! LOL
And here's the whole table... "Merry July Christmas!"

We can't forget that this is also Sightseeing Saturday with Christine. Instead of taking you to an exotic place, I opted to show you one of the grocery store area we live close to. These are what gets my children walking to from time to time.
Strategically, there are cement statues of animals! Like this beautiful squatting horse... Perfect to ride on with great shades in the summer time!
At the very end is this big hippo, and... (don't my children look comfy) ;-)
This bowing elephant greets us at the other end! Look at my son, he's showing you how fun each one is! ;-)

I was asked two major questions last Thursday.

"Where do you store all these stuff"?

Answer: I live in an apartment so storage is very important for my tablescaping. I have two big trunks in the living room that hold my accessories and my wedding china. I have a 10-opening bookcase that holds 10 of my dinnerware sets that's next to our dining table also serving as my buffet. Above it are wall shelves that hold my more "can use daily nice china" and vases. I also have some dinnerware at the very top of my pantry shelves. The more overt seasonal patterns are in the storage and gets swapped according to my designs and inspiration. My stemware are held in two small cabinets lining up in our hallway, and again, more are in the storage. I've been collecting since the late 90s, so I had to be creative with storage, each year and with every move.

"Do you eat at these tables or do you just set them for fun?"

Answer: We eat on 99% percent of the tables I set. My children love playing, "restaurant" the best where I get to serve them and they just wait to have their plates filled. LOL I invested in stain-resistant white tablecloths and use blankets no one uses anymore and wash them as spills happen to avoid any stain setting in. If I can't imagine a menu to go with the setting, most likely it won't get done. Plus, most of the "fun" tablescapes I do, it's between meals, so I make sure to take a lot of angle shots to recreate it someday.

Well, I can't seem to stop smiling at how generous you all are in celebrating with me yesterday! I loved every single comment and will actually take a few hours tomorrow to return most if not all visits. It was great having so many visitors in one day, my head is still reeling! Whew!

But before I can do any of that, I need to go to the store and grab me some...

of these for sandwiches;

some of these for a quick lunch or dinner since it's so hot! We actually ran out after several months!

And a gallon or two of this because we want to do our bodies good! LOL

So... until I can personally go blog hopping and leave you all some bloggy love, you'll just have to accept this big...

Now, if you see really chic and pretty tablescapes, it's not about being grand or tall or full of "whatnots" but rather clean, crisp and simply beautifully set tables. You can do that, right? A big HELLO and WELCOME! Some of you, I already know, some not yet, but I hope after today, we can all be great blog buddies! And if you have never heard of SITS, then you should so click on the icon above and get commentin' cuz that's what it's about, becoming a part of the commenting sisterhood! Some blogger I know compared commenting to chocolate and how she loves chocolate, and another, to being the life of a blog, so you know how excited I am to "read" you all here! I think comments are such a great alternative to an "early morning, but no longer groggy" coffee buzz; though, I am not a fan... ;-)

This little corner of Blogland is where I collect posts on my TABLESCAPING ADVENTURES! I am the crazy (creative) lady who makes my husband ask, "What Now?" Yes, I love to decorate and all that homey stuff, but since you can only do so much when you have no money and you're in a temporary dwelling, tabletop designing is my next love! The other part of me, I'm a SAHM to three, who's been married to a great man for over twelve years! Oh yeah, I'm crazy about purple and I'm not too girly! We're talking "jeans and t-shirt" anytime, baby!

Heather and Tiffany of SITS (The Secret's in the Sauce), so made my day when I got the email that I'll be featured today and since today is the normal day to do tablescapes, perfect! *woot woot* I didn't have to mess up my hair in coming up with what to wow you with. I'll just do another tablescape or a wonderful placesetting! (oh no, I'm choosing, that could lead to more thinking...)LOL

Ok, first some refreshment... "Brain", what can we serve all these wonderful SITS VIPs? How about some ice cold lemonade! "Brain", you're a genius! Oh, yeah, "Brain" is the other master of this themed blog, she makes sure that I don't overspend on our growing collection of tabletop goodies and that I take lots of pictures! We make a great team, ask anybody! :-)

As you know, tablescaping extends to being the best hostess you can be, so of course I have the "tried and true" cold lemonade to greet you with! Enjoy!

Then join me for some great food (did you bring some? LOL), after all, you are the "Star of the Day" just for stopping by! Which by the way is the theme of this placesetting! Clever, huh? The hubs told me do a Martha Stewart table, but with two smallish kiddos running around, time is the first thing to go out the window! (No wonder time flies!) *wink*...so sit down and enjoy your stay!

My style is thrifty, doable and spans all styles. Let's take this placesetting for example... the plates, from Ambiance called, "Aristocrat" in yellow, I got from Ebay for only $1.87 a piece!

The "Life" placemat, FREE since I won it from another great blogger, the goblet, Gorham's "Rose Serenade", I found at Tuesday Morning for only $4; normally $10!

Faux flowers and Libbey's "Star" bowl, Dollar Tree for $1 each and the red Kitchen waffle weave towel for a napkin, Target clearance for 50 cents!

If you ever need ideas for your next table, then this is one of the great stops for you! I do mean only one as there are lots of talented tablescapers or thrifty queens out there, like our lovely meme hosts for today, Susan and Leigh!

This is the day where all lovers of tablescaping get together and "wow" each other through each table. There are no hard fast rules, just have fun and don't be afraid to use what you already have. As long as you can tell the readers how you arrived at your tablescape design thought process, you got us drooling!

Especially me, I love to learn how others think about the way they see things. That's why I started blogging about my tabletop designs. So I can learn more techniques!

Hello everyone, sorry I haven't visited much of you, but I'm finally getting the hang of our new schedule. Plus, I'm learning how to bake, so that's part of what's keeping me from blogging lately.

Well... for today's triple post, I'd like to share how our dining area that now normally looks like this...

My hubs was supposed to come home Sunday afternoons, but his new Chicago crew gets the 4th off every year, so he came home yesterday afternoon instead! Yay! And since I had no plans to do anything for the actual Independence Day, that also changed!

We all of a sudden needed to put together a table and menu worthy of America's most important day of the year! Where did we turn to to pull this off? Why, Dollar Tree of course! See this candle, isn't just so cute?

Sally, are you seeing all the blue? LOL

Rhoda, my true treasure today are those wavy blue stemmed martini glasses! Only $1 each from DT! I found the last good six at that particular store. Yay me!
How do you like my placesetting? The placemats, glasses, candles and star bowls are all DT finds. The Libbey "Star" bowls are for potpourri, but since I don't do potpourris, I used them as our ice cream bowls! The red Canopy "Cranberry" plates (Walmart- $1 ea), I used as chargers for our shallow salad bowl, "Classic White" by Corelle (2005). The flatware, they're my everyday Hampton "Lace". See them perfectly balanced on top of the bowls? Mr. Man (my dear hubs) said it reminded him of fireworks sparks! How cool is that?!
We hit Albertson's for the menu and I found that the red Gatorade G2 "Fruit Punch" was the perfect complimentary shade! Those blue napkins (Anna's Linens- .99 ea) were from my Memorial Day table.
The other cute thing I found at DT were these three different looking hanging twister sticks I hung on our pendant chandy. Talk about a tall centerpiece! Gotta love that! And see the star banner on the drapes, that was the last one there and I knew it would be perfect with the table.
Instead of a full on flag theme, I let the candles show off our pride for the ol' "red, white and blue"! The "Two Bubble" glass candlesticks (Hobby Lobby- 80% off) looked great with the glasses.

The hubs said, "Wow" when all was lit and the gatorade was added. So cool!

What do you think? Did I do our country proud with this table? I got three YES votes from three full pledged citizens! LOL

This Is The Place

Last year, exactly, we were in Utah visiting my hubs, Mr. Man's family and they took us to..."This is The Place Heritage Park". It's a memorial park for the history of the Latter-day Saints or commonly known as Mormon people, like me! :-)
There's me with my beautiful fam... at the entrance- after the whole fun! Can't you tell humidity and heat doesn't agree with my hair? LOL

There were so much to do and see! I couldn't possibly show all of them to you! Blogger will shut me down for sure! Don't want that!

Here's what a schoolhouse looked back in 1865. Isn't it cool?! My children are on the right side, middle.

Oh-oh, what happened, why is my baby being punished? Oh, yeah, my teen helped demonstrate what happens when you misbehave back in 1865. You go to the front of the class, turn away and touch the wall with your nose, hold out your arms back and hold a book on each hand. Ouch!

They even learned how to write "July 4, 1865" in shorthand (right side ending in 1865) and the word, "flag" at the bottom. Neat huh?

There were goats and other farm animals like horses! See my younger daughter's head angle? She was ecstatic to see all those horses and even more excited that she can ride them!

See? What'd I tell ya? Look at that "I'm so happy" smile! That alone was worth the heat and expanse of the place! Oooohhh, all that walking we did! Our son was in his element when we found miniature buildings like this firehouse! It was such a respite for me not to worry where they are for about 20 minutes!

I was so glad when we found the Picnic Area! Here are the kiddos resting and bonding!

Two of the three men we were with... That's my hubby and my bro-in-law, Gary after we ate. Ready for more walking!

Ok, we got to ride in a stage coach, or whatever it's called. See me? I'm the one in the purple of course! (Just seeing if you forgot already) LOL

And we also rode on the trolley train they had going around. This is my darling and gorgeous, hubs, Mr. Man. Love him!!!

We found so many tin cookware and kitchen gadgets and cabinet coverings that we just had to visit the Tin Shoppe and here's the rather dry comic of a tin smith. He could deliver great jokes without cracking even one smile!

We had so much fun! I wish we were there again, but at least I got to take you on a virtual trip with us! Have a great INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

Two Good Reasons

Hello, still can't do much visiting, but I thought I'd join in on the fun anyway! I did this table because last June 21st, it was both Father's Day and our middle daughter's 10th birthday. I needed a neutral table to appease both. I also wanted to use my blue and white Asian mini platters and the goblets from Dollar Tree like Susan's. Only, by the time I got there and decided to grab some, I only had the water goblets and martini glasses to choose from... I also had this blue pot that's been with us since 2005 and the plant that's thriving. It looked great together!

Everywhere, I used blue and green but opted for no tablecloth.

I decided to create a focal point centerpiece again so we can focus on the dinner.

All the "bling" are minimal so that it didn't take away from the color scheme! There's the Dollar Store "Susan" goblets. I love them!!! They are my thrifty find for today! Can't beat a dollar a piece for good goblets!

Gotta show off the gorgeous blues again and green! LOL

Sorry for the absence, we've had so many things going on schedule wise that I needed a break from at least one blog. Also, I'm in the process of melding two of my blogs so I'm working on that as well.

But today, I want to tell you about an indulgence buy that is so making me want to be outdoors more. My coleus plants! I got them at Home Depot for $1.29 a pot (there are three in the pot.

Also, I just love these rectangular claypots! I've wanted some for so long but could never really afford them. So last week, I told myself that I'm living a little and spent money on those pots. Seeing them everyday helps me to get up and out and check on all of my plants, as few as they are.

And those coleus, I just love, love them but the few I've tried in the past, didn't grow so well and well, died! LOL

Look! I have two of them! I'm being brave, ha? LOL And look at this bottom one, is that a flower?
